The Farmerettes Read  104 ä A diverse group of young women just out of high school live together during the summer of 1943 on a farm as part of the Farm Services tending the fields and the livestock doing the work of the men who are off fighting the war in Europe We follow the stories of Helene who sends her wages home to support her single mother; PeggL the girls feels most out of place; and Jean whose family farm has been taken over by this group of farmerettes As the Second World War rages across the ocean friendship romance hardship and heartbreak shape their summer and no one will be left unchang. Rounding up from two and a half because even though I had a heck of a time keeping track of all the girls and their stories throughout the book I still confuse Isabel and Binxie by the end I had really grown to love these girls and care about what happened with them I was sad that the summer and thus the book had to end because I want to know what happened to each of the girlsMy only two complaints are that 1 the writing seemed a little too juvenile for me it didn't seem like a teen novel 2 It was really hard to care about X I felt like she wasn't in the book as much as the other girls and though I really liked her story view spoilerI feel like it would have had impact if she was either revealed to be one of the main girls or if she were treated like all the others with backstory and freuent chapters As it was I felt like she was just thrown in to be the token gay character hide spoiler

I received this book as a part of Goodreads First ReadsI greatly enjoyed reading this book I had never heard of the Farmerettes before and actually was inspired by this to do additional research because I found them so interesting Usually I don't enjoy historical fiction especially around WWII which I find overdone but this was so different I sat and read it almost all the way through in a sitting once I found time to read The characters were a very diverse and well written cast At first I was confused by the constant head hopping switching POVs between the girls and found it distracting this was bad enough for a while to rate the four star review However once I got used to it and began being able to differentiate between the girls I found it much much smoother and easier to understandThe supporting characters were just as diverse and lovable no spoilers but the poetry book and the abandoned farm was my favorite side story Their stories complemented not distracted from the main story and added to the rich story world Read É PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook É Gisela Tobien Sherman

A different angle of life during WWII from the homefront I'd never really thought about the part farms needed to play in order to supply soldiers with food Never realized that women instantly needed to step into roles for which they had been previously deemed unsuitable This is a moving account of six teens who farmed together during one memorable summer that changed their lives forever A great intergeneration read for grandmothers mothers and daughters
