Patchwork Selkie Fractured Fairy Tales #5An enchanting and heartwarming short storySelkie stories always have sad endings Except for this oneUsually it’s men who do the stealing of selkie pelts in traditional folklore A man who lives by the sea spies on the selkie and keeps the creature’s seal skin so she’s forced t. Childless human woman finds a selkie baby and takes the child in as her own I’ve read this story before It was called Soundings The Water Elemental by Janine Donoho though definitely two very different books beyond the similar beginning Janine’s turned into of a murder mystery with the odd child in it Being that this is a short story it felt rushed in uite a few places giving us exposition rather than just letting the story unfold Like there were a couple of spots that just felt like jumps in logic as in it seemed like everyone around there was used to the idea of selkies and mermaids living among them As in the scene when the fisherman sees the child’s hair for the first time and complains to his wife that the child is one of the people from the sea There’s no disbelief there’s no uestioning the child’s hair It’s just a uick complaint Same thing for when the woman is drawn by the siren song she knows immediately what the song is she knows immediately what the selkies are There’s also no reasoning really for why the wife initially stole the baby’s seal skin But it is a beautiful tale of longing the beauty and mystery of the sea and lyrical descriptions and I did love how the girl fixed things at the end
