The Earl's BargainL security for life All she has to do is travel across England posing as his wife They're both hiding secrets; not the least of which is their budding love for each othe. Five or six pages into this book I had a distinct feeling I'd read it before Ten pages later the feeling grew stronger so I checked my Goodreads reviews and ratings no sign of The Earl's BargainThe characters and the narrative were so generic that they could have come from anywhere Half a dozen historical romance tropes thrown together then shaken not stirred Cookie cutter hero who has rebuilt his family fortunes through piracy no details whatsoever Cookie cutter heroine who finds herself widowed and penniless about to be ejected from the stately house that once belonged to the hero's familySomehow this unlikely pair end up racing across England in search of the mysterious villain who ruined both families whilst their siblings race after them in bumbling pursuit Stock action movie escape from a prison room and the two pairs cease their incessant suabbling long enough to propose and marry HurrahI've no idea how sub standard novels like this make it through the selection and editing process I would never have picked it up if I hadn't enjoyed the author's The Bride Wore Blue

This was a good story with a good premise and it had some decent little twists I thought though that the addition of Louisa's sister and the Earl's cousin were extra fluff that were filler than of any interestLouisa also irritated me for what she did she professed that she cared for the poor and the lower classes but she only complained about their poor lot in life She never did anything beyond writing a few essays and try to get her voice heard in parliament When they pass by a 5 year old orphan barefoot in the rain and likely starving to death; does she do anything No She just ruminates about how awful things are and that the boy might freeze to death Then nearly the entire time that they are travelling in Cornwall in freezing weather she's feeling sorry for the driver who isn't with them and when they stay at an inn he sleeps in the stable Other than give him some soup at one point she does nothing to alleviate the problemI like the romance but Louisa's hypocritical opinions pretty much ruined the story I never grew to like Louisa and the Earl seemed rather one dimensional The author hinted at an interesting backstory for the Earl but there just was not enough written about itThe bad guy being so vicious over a lost love just did not have a believable verisimilitude because so little was provided about his own backstoryI would not read this again
