Shadow of the BatgirlWn to love she'll have to step out of the shadows and overcome her greatest obstacle that voice inside her head telling her she can never be a heroSarah Kuhn author of Heroine Complex and I Love You So Mochi takes on her favorite hero of color for a new audience of readers Featuring the edgy art style of Nicole Goux Shadow of the Batgirl tells the harrowing story of a girl who overcomes the odds to find her uniue identi. Sometimes you just need to read a story that makes you feel good and hopeful that there is the possibility for people to change and do betterShadows of the Batgirl is a hero origin story and it was not one I was familiar with before I really enjoyed the transition from trained assassin to kind hearted hero and didn't expect the identity reveal of the past Batgirl which other fans of the Marvel world might have picked up on soonerI really loved the illustration style It had so much texture and vibrancy The fact that a lot of the story was set in a library really just cemented my love of the illustrations One thing I do find with these comic style graphic novels is that they feel like the first half od a story and the leave me wanting so much But I'm not sure that this actually is part of a series I hope it will be because I'd love to read of Cassandra's story and see how her time as Batgirl unfolds

review Shadow of the Batgirl 107 É Cassandra Cain teenage assassin isn't exactly Batgirl materialnot yet at least But when Batgirl goes missing from Gotham can Cassandra defy her destiny and take on a heroic mantle of her very ownCassandra Cain is the daughter of super villains and a living weapon trained from birth to be the ultimate assassin But that doesnCassandra Cain teenage assassin isn't exactly Batgirl materialnot yet at least But when Batgirl goes missing from Gotham can Cassandra defy her destiny and take on a heroic mantle of her very ownCassandra Cain is the daughter of super villains and a living weapon trained from birth to be the ultimate assassin But that doesn't mean she has to stay that way right She'll have to go through an identity crisis of epic propor. I mean everybody feels a little weird sometimes Or overwhelmed Or out of place It's nice to be able to talk about it like this Barbara Gordon to Cassandra Cain on page 135While I get that the DC Zoom and DC Ink imprints are directed at the 'tween' and teenage young adult crowd respectively Cassandra Cain's incarnation of Batgirl is somewhat like Harley uinn sort of an odd choice for a starring role Cain's background as a trained assassin in her childhood and some of the other dark or violent subject matter is just in my opinion only better suited for a mature or slightly older audience However Shadow of the Batgirl surprisingly worked best when Cain received some informal mentoring from two distinct ladies restauranteur 'Jackie' Fujikawa Yoneyama in the style of a snappy but cool aunt though they are not related and librarian Barbara Gordon as a sincere big sister type that she meets upon her escape into Gotham City The several scenes featuring any combination of those three in conversation were the best sections of this book

Tions to find out But how do you figure out who you're supposed to be when you've been trained to become a villain your entire lifeAfter a soul shattering moment that sends Cass reeling she'll attempt to answer this uestion the only way she knows how learning everything she possibly can about her favorite hero Batgirl But Batgirl hasn't been seen in Gotham for years and when Cass's father threatens the world she has gro. I wasn't a fan of the Cassandra Cain Batgirl when I was reading her first appearances twenty years ago and this reboot doesn't do anything to win me over now I think it has to do with the fact that in both iterations she is an assassin She kills people Many people Many many people And all the characters in the book just roll with that once she says she sort of kind of feels bad about the last attempted murder of the many many many people she has killed Because wearing a costume and fighting bad people as a hero cancels out what should be years of incarceration rehabilitation and mental health therapyIf you can set aside all the above this is a decent enough modern superhero adventure for young adults
