Published in 2002 this beautifully illustrated volume covers prehistoric imagery all over the world with an emphasis on European sites and objects The goal of the book in addition to surveying the material is a demonstration of the diverse cultural contexts in which prehistoric imagery was created Of course with prehistory there are often as many uestions raised as answered but I learned a great deal about how varied and sophisticated our ancestors' creations are My experience of this material is from the art historical vantage point so the historical and archeological detail here was really valuable for me Though some knowledge of the subject was an asset in reading this book I think it would be accessible to lay readers
